    I absolutely love your channel just as many of us here do. My comment is not to discourage you, but to save you money and help you not lose to much harvest. Please listen to Chelsea and just go with cattle panel right from the start. Trust me if you go back in there now and redo the “arch trellises” you won’t regret it as bad as you will if you just wait to see if the welded wiring works. Those arch trellises will cave in with the vines and veggies. My husband and I used to try and go with cheaper materials years ago to try and save some money. But noticed and therefore learned, it would be DOUBLE COST in the long run because it wouldn’t hold or wouldn’t last as long as the better material does… so we stopped that bad habit and now we build things with sturdier material (yeah it’s a little more expensive but it will last for years). Making our cost be worth every penny. The teepee trellis will also be hard to harvest because it closes down the ability to get to the inside tomatoes. Wish you the best of luck!

    I use a commercial mixed whole grain feed, which probably costs a little less than AU$1 per week per chicken. They do get additional greens, some scraps, depending on time of year etc. I do not really like the pellet food, because processed. They also have some free range time per day, I wish it could be more, but predators. The feed that is the majority of their diet has trace amounts of garlic for parasites, and I do not have any issue with mites etc. If I had more land, I would maybe grow sunflower and some other seed crops, but that is for the future.

    Fermenting - Anyone who is interested in doing it, soaking in water for 24 hours is NOT fermenting the food. It’s also been proven to lower food intake and be worse overall than dry food. To ferment, you generally need 3 days of soaking and preferably with a bit of ferment liquid from the previous batch. Fermented food will smell different… tangy, sour, sweet, yeasty… and should have bubbles.

    I've had one fora while ... knowing what I know now I won't do it again. This breed barks constantly day and night. This is not a self-assured breed and is very emotional. This breed could never ever be a working service dog. I love mine but he is hard to deal with than other breeds. If your area has them you will find them at the local pound or dog shelter. Not because someone gave them up. Because they run away. It is their biggest trait behind barking. If you have neighbors they will hate you. If you think you and the family will go take a walk around the property you can't... they will run off and you may never see them again. In the DEI movement world people pick their dogs for looks... you cannot train these traits out of them. Good luck. After you have a great Pyrenees your second dog will be the best dog in the world 😂😂

    My favorites are the Buff Orpingtons. Very friendly. I do have one that is broody on a regular basis. It was interesting to me that you mention getting different chicken breeds in pairs. This makes so much sense. I have a few singles out there and they seem to be the ones that are lower on the pecking order...except for my Brahma, she is the alpha around here.

    I have had many breeds. Two bantams that didn't do well were the gorgeous, cute, puffy cheek partridge? None of them lived long. We also had all of our pretty and sweet bantam cochins get killed or die easily. I'm sure it's not like that for everyone, but it was those two with the most problems, here. Of our first chickens, our white Silky roo got carried away by a dog, and we found him hiding in a creek crevice! Also had a Barred Rock roo fight off a fox and left 5 piles of feathers in the yard. No hens missing. He showed up that night with a few bite wounds. Amazing bird. And gentle to the hens and people. Yes, we have them all better protected for a long time, now.

    Buff Orrington's are the most fun. Beautiful. Hard to tell apart. Follow us around. Follow the lawnmower around. Stay out later than everyone else-- all of them. Get picked off easiest. Not good camouflage. Easy to hold, easy to pick up. Get picked on by others, but also are not afraid of the dog! Easter Eggers: Beautiful. All look different. Some hens have stunning roo like colors and twirling neck feathers. Talk all the time. Smart. variety of blue and green eggs. Had three rescued RIR in quarantine all winter with messy butts and kept nearly in a one window garage. Never the less, each layed an egg every day! Have read that they can boss around gentler hens. All time favorite hens have been OEG hen bantams that were raised by a mom that we saved from the clutches of a hawk. She taught her chicks we were good, and they told their chicks we were good. :) Some loved to be held and get all over scratches. I've had so many breeds.... Barred Rocks were great and live a long time. Loved our BT Japanese. Roo was a favorite. Easy to hold. Worst was the pretty Mille Fluer De Uccle roosters. Pea brains. grrrr.

    Now, to my favorite breeds (besides the non APA breed Easter Egger). Black Australorp, Barred Rock, White Rock, Welsummer, Wyandottes (I have 2 Columbian, 1 silver laced, 1 gold laced). Least favorite BY FAR - the Ancona. VERY aggressive to the other girls in the flock (though not to people), as I gather is a trait common to the Mediterranean breeds. The Campines and Cubalayas were cute (small) and WAY too good at flying. Fences that keep the foxes out don't keep those birds in and they still become fox food.

  • @brucealvarez9263
    @brucealvarez9263 5 днів тому

    Sunny is not an Ameraucana, she is an Easter Egger, which is not an APA recognized breed at all, of the "original" form (muffs and beards and from which the APA Ameraucana breed was created) as opposed to the new hybrid "Easter Eggers" that have a totally different look and are not related to the "original" EEs. Apparently now any hybrid (usually a legbar cross of some sort) that lays other than a shade of white or brown is an "Easter Egger". There are 8 specific colors for the Ameraucana breed and Sunny isn't one of them. You will find APA Ameraucana at some hatchery sites, they will run $25+ per chick as compared to the $3.50 for an EE. Purebred Ameraucanas are available mostly from private breeders who specialize in 1 or 2 of the 8 colors. Some hatcheries that sell their EEs as Ameraucana and if you buy one at a farm store, they will be listed as what the hatchery calls them. That said, the "original" Easter Egger is one of my favorites, I currently have 5 hens and a rooster in my flock of 30 birds. They are the only "breed" that I have ever had more than 2 or 3 of at a time. My oldest is now 9 and still laying 3 eggs a week.

    That fencing is fine for keeping your dogs in place. However, it will not work for goats; they will push and rub on it until they pop the welds and bend it all up. Also it does not work by itself for gardens. Full grown cottontails can pop right through that 2x4 opening. So for gardens you have to cover it with something like chicken wire to keep the rabbits out. Just thought you'd like to know.

    I live in Northern Michigan and we also had the high temps. In the morning I would mist down the the Chicken Runs and when my husband got home around 3:30 he would mist the Runs down. My chickens have to be in an enclosed run because of predators, so I need to provide all of their nutrition they could get if they could free range. So yes I am the one who does buy Melons and veggies just for the chickens. My main concern during these high temps have been my momma and her chicks who are in a separate coop downstairs in our walk out area, they did not benefit from the winds that we had, the wind is kind of blocked in in that area. So again with misting their area 2x a day cold water 2x a day and extra moisture dense foods were given while we were gone 9 hours a day. We also set up a camera on them in case they showed distress signs (my husband has an opportunity to come home if needed during work thank you Lord). All went well and hopefully in the next week or 2 we will be able to integrate them into the main flock (retail work schedule allowing).

    You sure got that right. One bad bird can make everybody's life miserable. Good you got it straightened out and some chicks going. I've got a girl running around the yard with 14 tagging along. Another one that just got her youngens off the nest this morning after sitting for almost two months. Bless her heart, she sure earned it. And hadn't been seeing many eggs lately. When checking on a third hen this morning I found them all. Girl has been getting off the nest letting everybody lay in her box. She's sitting on a mountain of eggs. Not sure how I'm gonna stop that? lol Chicken drama...... Gotta love it.
